How do you all get around the fact that the plastic or glass hood top blocks beneficial uv rays from flourescent blubs?

Only thing I can think of doing is laying the light fixture above without a hood.. but that seems dangerous ..

any ideas?

My tubes are about 2" above the water with no glass between. That seems to be the case with all Juwel tanks. So as long as the endcaps are protected from water it should be alright.
