Fish in filter

Hi all new to this forum but I have a little question I've recently purchased 2 black ghost knife fish and today found them in my external filter still alive any way I can stop this from happening again? Thanks in advance

Yes, you need to get guards for the pipes; mesh or filter sponges will do until you can get proper ones. Watch they don't get clogged up and slow the flow to your filter too much.
