Mostly depends on the amount of light that you have, although many people will say that root tabs are probably worthwhile in any planted tank with heavily-rooted plants.

Plants will show signs of nutrient deficiency, but the "symptoms" are often common to multiple causes (such as "yellowing leaves").

Stem plants take in most of their nourishment through the leaves and stems. Their roots are primarily only for holding them fast. These are the plants you will need to dose some ferts for.

rosette plants like swords tend to take all their nuitrients in through the roots. Root tabs are the best for them.
