Hi all. I am new to the fishforums. PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!!!
I am a livebearer specialist in mollies, guppies and swordtails/ platies Xixophorus. Why is it that no one who breeds green sailfin mollies [either P. Velifera or P. Latippina] is willing to sell them to anyone in the Hobby? NEITHER Goliad Farms nor Segrest Farms sell to the Public: only to retail Aquarium Stores. When you contact these retail stores.....they do not sell online, they do not want to bother to take the time to sell: although they take credit cards over the phone and have an account with UPS! It is such a shame......but a person in the USA who wants green sailfin mollies ( Latippina or Velifera) may need to resort to purchase from a Foreign Country!!!!!! The USA needs more fishfarms: fishfarms will bring in more income for the USA!!! The US GOVERNMENT needs to subsidize these farms ! America for Americans!!!!! I am fed up with all the outsourcing that has hurt MILLIONS OF AMERICANS!!!! It is such an grave inconvenience to purchase from a foreign country: shipping, trans shipping charges & local shipping......after the price of the actual fish being purchased. Anyone who has any good ideas....please provide some positive input! Even if you want to purchase from Mexico......you can not do it!!!!!! So strange..but is easy to be able to purchase albino P. Velifera and/or Latippina.......and other fantastic Hybrids!!! What is wrong
with Green Sailfin Mollies? Has money money money become an objective in the Hobby? What satisfaction can hobbyists get from making it very difficult for others to obtain these fish? MONEY MONEY MONEY........and making them un affordable for American Hobbyists!!!! The true meaning of the Hobby was O R I G I N A L L Y: sharing, helping and enjoying the Hobby together: making it easier to purchase special Tropical Fish for everyone: afford-ability......and still able to make a nice profit in the process! I am not an offensive person: so please.......I hope that people who do not agree with me....do not take offense at what I am saying. I am a Sharing type of Hobbyist......and should not expect or hope that others share the same sentiments and ideas! Thanks for hearing me out! Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. I am deathly afraid of Forums: some individuals get very angry and offensive if you do not agree with an idea or point of view that is different to theirs!
Thanks for hearing me out. I hope that this will get posted.

Best bet would be contacting some local clubs; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/292232-local-aquarium-society-directory/

A quick look on Aquabid found a few sailfin molly for sale, though not green. You may want to ask those sellers.

You might be surprised at what is locally bred by club members. Most are happy to break even, as they do it for a hobby.

Welcome to the forum Bluestone.
I must agree with Tolak that a club is your best source for wild type fish of almost any description. I get many of my "hard to find" fish at my local fish club's auctions and at the American Livebeareres Association convention auctions. As you have noted, there is a big difference between hobbyists and commercial enterprises. The only commercial sites that I would use for wild type livebearer fish are Swampriveraquatics and Tampafishman1. Both deal with many livebearers and are semi-hobbyist in their approaches. Although they make a living selling tropical fish, without government subsidies, they are both the home of owners who have not given up their own hobby in favor of a profit. Each specializes in different fish and both can be found selling on Aquabid. Another place that I enjoy dealing with is Floridaguppiesplus, but they do not carry wild type livebearers. I use them for fish food and for a source of hard to find cories.

LFS sometimes carry them. You can special order then as well. A LFS around here (now closed) carried them. They were beautiful fish.

Hi bluestone882 :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I too suggest you network with local club members to obtain the more difficult to find species. That's a good part of the fun of fishkeeping. What would be so great about raising one more species that everyone else could get whenever they wanted to?

I would also check with Mark Denaro of Anubias Design if I were looking for an imported fish I couldn't find elsewhere. He can be reached at [email protected], or, join his group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anubiasdesign/ and you will get a list of fish weekly (or so) so you can preorder ones you want.

Just a word of advice... If you chill out a bit, your experience on this and other forums can be quite pleasant. If you have any problems regarding this thread, please click on the report button and a moderator will help you.

Used to see them on Aquabid, but having a look nothing on there ATM. Agree that looking for local clubs and breeders.

Hi Gerard. Welcome to TFF.
I think I have seen you more often at the ALA site and at the convention with your own breeding results. It is good to see another livebearer enthusiast here.

Hello all I'm also new to the fish forums, I registered a few minutes ago so I could try to shed some light on this topic. I caught a group of green sail fin mollys a few months ago out of a really cold river with fairly acidic water called the Wakulla river, some of you may know it as the river where the original Tarzan movie was shot. First of all let's keep in mind that taking a fish out of its natural habitat where it lived it's whole life is extremly stressful to the fish and it may take a long time for the fish to become comfortable living a tank life. In my experience with them so far I have found them not only hard to breed but hard to keep as well. This may be why they are so hard to get ahold of. I have one that has been pregnant one time last month but I dident see the babies... I'm guessing she ate them but idk. She is currently pregnant again I'm going to try somthing a bit different this time. I'm going to put her in a breeding net when I think she is about to pop. And if that doesn't work I I'm going to give her her own 75 gallon tank and lots of hideing places for the barbies, if I am successfull I would b glad to sell some babies and the reason I say sell is due to the obvious rarity of the fish and I am without a job atm. If your interested you can PM me for more details. Thank you all for listening, I hope I helped answer a few questions and I hope everyone is having a good day.

Username825, this thread 4 years old and is very doubtful you will get a response from any of the above members :/
