I know to look for active fish and ones that arent labouring around the tank.

what do I look for in the likes of corys?

what i want:

blue neon tetras
corys

they are to go into a 8-9 gal tank.

what quantities should i get i was thinking

10 neon
3 corys

or is that too many for the tank?

also what food should i get for the corys?

cheers in advance

that tank isn't ideal for either, neons are a shoaling fish and need plenty of room to shoal, they are not active after time, they only shoal when under stress, and when you have had them for a certain time they relax, and stop shoaling, and also both fish need a mature tank.

There would be no harm in 4 of each, I don't think.
With 4 of each, you would have to keep up with very frequent water changes as that is about 2" of fish per gallon so you would be quite a bit overstocked .
