Ammonia spike

My ammonia was a little high on Sat. night so I changed 1/3rd of the water. I retested the tank again today and the ammonia was even higher. So i changed another 1/3rd of the water. How long should I wait to test the water again? I doubt it would read the spike right now since i just changed the water... TIA

Maybe your tap water contains ammonia...

test every day. why is your ammonia high? are you cycling the tank?

I cycled the tank for a few weeks and I was getting nitrite and ammonia readings of zero for a while so that's when I got the dp's. Right now I have 8 tiger barbs, 5 dps, and 1 common pleco in a 45g tank. I used the barbs and pleco to help the cycling
