Thanks to everybody who answered introduction. Have now seen the light, read up on fishless cycling and managed to persuade the family that household ammonia is the way to go! :D

Went out today and bought product called AmoKleen Household Ammonia. Does anyone know about it? According to the label it should contain Ammonia (9 1/2 %)and nothing else.

I have been trying to work out from your links where to start; if I have got the maths right, it sounds like a good idea to add 8 drops/day to the bigger tank (61x31x46 cms) and see if that will start an ammonia spike- that sound about right? Then carry on adding the same (or whatever it takes)/ day and when the nitrites peak halve the daily amount until end of nitrites. Still feel terrified I'll get the chemistry wrong and not realise until I've poisoned all the fish.

Strongest dissent was from my 4-year-old (Come away from there Mummy, cleaning things aren't good for fish!).

Thanks for good advice. :)
