True aqautic plants i.e. Amazon Swords will live indefinitely if the water conditions are right. There are thousands of articles on how to acheive this but basically you need sufficient lighting and nutrients. A well-planted tank will reduce nitrate levels and phosphate levels, which contribute to algae, they will not alter pH or hardness. Hope this helps.
