Air pump

I bought an air pump today, a crocodile and the air comes out of his mouth. It wont work though.. i've never had 1 before so its probably my fault, all i ve done is put it in the tank. Have i done something wrong?

These sort of ornaments normally have to be linked to a pump that sits outside the tank with an air tube.(I once had a treasure chest that worked on the same princible

If it is hooked to a pump, it could be because it is too deep and the pump is too small to get air down to it.
