Good evening,
I have a quick question about one of my zebrafish who other then having its mouth WIDe open at all times seems to be fine. Does anyone know why it's doing this? Is this the starting of a sickness? I have about 4 other zebras, 15 white clouds, 4 neons, 3 goldfish and two neon sharks in this tank so if there is something wrong with the fish I need to know if I should take it out. A bit of a newbie here - thanks for the hlp.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Have alot of fish in that tank.
Open mouth can mean that there is something stuck in the mouth so check the mouth.

25 gallon - but the zebras, neons and white clouds are very small. My goldfish are 1-1 1/2 inches long, the sharks are 2"long and the pleco is a small one.
Ammonia is always in the "safe" colour on my moniter. ph is usually 7.0. nitrate and nitrite levels haven't been checked. I know it might sound bad but I've had the fish for a couple months now and the tank is always clear, the water doesn't smell and I vaccuum once a week while changing approx 25-50% of the water and checking ph level. Should I buy both nitrate and nitrite testers? Are they both as important as the ammonia and PH?
I looked in as he was swimming around with his mouth open but we just saw his gills (reddish inside). My first thought is he swallowed a rock, but he was a little better this morning and he doesn't have any funny spots or loss of appetite.

I appreciate your help. This is my new hobby so any comments and help is very much appreciated.

That tank is severly overstocked the red gills are probably due to bad water quality.
First goldfsih alone need 20gal, then 10gal for every other one added.
They are massive waste producers and need excellent filters, even using two.
You are going to have to rehome the goldfish or all the fish are going to die of ammonia posioning.
For now an immediate water change.

Ammonia has never been a problem in my tank. I've had all these guys for at least 4-6 months now and they are all fine; they are all eating and swimming around.
When I said red gills, I meant inside his mouth is a reddish colour (and I mean like down his throat not just inside his mouth).
My goldfish are big waste producers but I vaccumm very often and enjoy taking care of the tank. I have an Aquaclear 50 filter that works very well.
Thank you for your comments though, I appreciate it very much.

Well it might be fine for now but I can't see how, you will run into problems sooner or later as the tank overstocked.
Always research your fish before you buy then, and you are keeping coldwater fish with tropical.
Is there a sore in his mouth sounds like he has a mouth infection.

Look under open mouth.

I appreciate all your help and advise as you have way more experience then I do and this is only my second tank of many more. Thanks for all the links as that open mouth one was exactly what I was looking for last night when I noticed it.
I'll keep you posted.

Ok, good luck.
Can only offer advice it down to you if you take it.

Fish is back to normal yesterday and all is fine in the aquarium. I'll let you know how it all goes as so far all testing has been fine. I went to the fish store yesterday and they said my tank water was great. Thanks for your help.

Ok, good luck.
