I have noticed a couple of rather nasty looking things in my tank. I had switched my filter off for an hour, and when I turned it back on, lots of little specs flew out. Upon closer inspection I found they were nasty little worms.

They are about 2mm in length, and I have since found them living in the gravel too. Have a look at this picture:

WORMS

I then spotted this nasty little growth - looks like it might be eggs (maybe snails, as I have a few of them?):

EGGS?

I hope someone can help me! I don't even want to put my hand in the tank while they are there.

Cheers,

Stephen.

Thanks for the ID debiasir. I have considered chemical treatment for snails, but am worried it will have a negative effect on the fish (despite the promises on the packaging).

I also considered getting some Clown Loaches (my favourite fish), as I understand they will gobble them up, but am worried my tank is a little on the small side for those fish in the long-term.

Cheers,

Stephen.

Worms! Ugh! Just the thought of them being there.....I know how you feel!

These look like a type of Planarian worm. Though it beats me which one. They are generally good for your tank, is a sign of a healthy tank, and exist whether you like it or not. Most mid to bottom-dwelling fishes would find them tasty morsels.

You've got two natural choices, if you don't like them being there:

1) Clean your filter media out, by chucking out your padding
2) If you're looking for fish that may prey on them, may I suggest Tiger Barbs?

(or wear gloves anytime your hands in the tank)

HTH

I would put fish in thier that would eat them. Loaches, tiger barbs, and even mollies they are always picking through the rocks at least mine did. I often wonder how those snails just seem to find thie way to tanks and worms to.

A little white crane flies in over the tank and drops a batch of snails eggs. Then another flies over and drops in the worms! :hey:

Hmmm - sounds like the worms aren't too much to worry about. I was concerned they might infect the fish ore something.

They are quite disgusting - I am cutting back on the feed I give the fish, as this seems to be a good way to reduce the population explosion of worms and snails.

I think it is also time to get some loaches in the tank.

Cheers,

Stephen.
