What random ideas have you had about fish? I mea, tank ideas, breeding different fish togehter, random ideas on cycling, anything like that. Here are some of mine...

The In-tank quarentine/hospital

Buy a small plastic tank (eg. Critter keeper of a suitable size) And glue it to the side of your tank so the top is just above the waterline. Takes up less room and can have its own filter, heater etc.

Cycling my 18gallon

I randomly thought of....
Setting it up, and using a fish/critter such as a betta, crab or ADF to cycle. This is to justify getting another :) Also, earlier I thought of washing the sand, then putting it in a bucket with a little bit of water, and putting a bag of gravel from a cycled tank in it, and some fish food. The idea was to fill the sand up with bacteria from the gravel, which would then eat the fish food, thus instantly cycling the tank the minute I put it in!!

The cycling thing has been thought of before and something like your seccond method is often used by people who already have tanks. You don't need to add fish food though if you use filter media/gravel and a couple of small, low-waste, hardy fish.

To list all the random ideas I have come up with would be impossible. However, I'll try a few...

I've thought about getting a 40 gallon or so and keeping just one sucking loach in it and concentrating on getting it to grow BIG. I'd eventualy put it in a bigger tank if necessary.

I've also thought of a heavily planted tank with all the algae eaters people confuse - SAEs, FSAEs, FFs, maybe otos etc. It would have to be big to accomodate all of them as I'd need to keep them in large groups to avoid confrontations if I wanted all of them in the same tank.

Then there's the coldwater river tank I was considering - white clouds, rosy reds/fatheads and some of those 'butterfly plecs' whose 'other' name currently escapes me...

I'd also like to someday have a real big goldfish tank :p

Then there's the 'fake saltwater' idea I've borrowed from someone else. I was thinking something around 15 gallons.

Oh and I've designed a kind of shell-dweller tank that runs round three walls in a room that I will hopefuly have in future :p.

Then there's the crazy ideas like having a 200 gallon with 100 zebra danios... or putting a trio of guppies in and waiting to see how long it takes for the tank to become over-stocked...

But, of course, my dream would be to have osphronemus gouramies... That WILL happen someday though ;).

Hello ... :)

Cool kind of post ... I'm afraid to say I've had 3 bottles of cold beer  it may interefere with my thinking ... -_-

How about growing your own bacteria from a gravel sample ... in a petri dish culture medium ??

Perhaps we could start our own mail a culture club :fun:

Good Day .... B)

AHAHAH, thats a great idea Mohave kid, lol.

I know this hardly applies to too many of you, but maybe LFS's should hire out or sell used filter media cartridges for all the types of filters they have, too newbies to cycle tanks with. They would sell pretty good.

That petri dish idea could realy work actualy...

"That petri dish idea could realy work actualy... "

   Hello Sylvia !!

Yes ... I know it could work !! but would it be practical ??

I wonder what medium we would need to use ?
I'd bet one could make a cheap incubator ??

aluminum foil .. a cardboard box .. a light bulb .. cheap fan

a small test tank ??

hmmm ... :alien: ... I need another beer :fun:

i was thinking of starting up a little business of selling cultured filter media / gravel that people could put in their tanks to start them off... but its just a thought, i don't really having the drive to do it :p

i am really thinking about starting up a new tank with some sorta industrial them to it like an old factory or bombed out mini town and have the fish swimming around it through smashed up old building... think that would be pretty cool.

another really far fetched idea would be to breed a fish and then with every new generation, reduce the tempurature of the tank a tiny bit then over a peroid of time (obviously a very long period of time) they could evolve into coldwater tropical fish... probably would take more than my life time and doubt it would work anyway. :D

I think that would be cool too ... :)

This would be even cooler ... the catch is you would need to start with a very large population ... evolution by the way has been recorded in even a single generation ..

When i lived back east ... eons ago .. i always wanted a brackish urban river tank .. an Eeel .. a few Blue Claw Crabs and a few beer cans !!

Good Day ... B)

Here is a random thought.

A bala tank that has about 2-3 feet of enclosed space over the water line so that when they jump you can see them flying through the air.

turn my pool into a (62,000 litres) one huge massive planted discus + community tank and go scubadiving every week to collect fry of my various fish :D

seal up my house, and turn it into a giant NW cichlid tank :D

No, the idea was to put bacteria in the sand before it goes in the tank. Instead of waiting two or so months after two or so months of setting it up, the idea was to cycle the sand in a bucket while setting up the rest of the tank. Confuzzled? Yep, me too.
