So, you walk into your ideal planted tank shop, or browse your ideal planted tank online store.

What does it sell?

Hi nry, my favourite planted tank shop is aquajardin near glos, it sells mainly tropica plants they do stock plants from other sources which look very good quality, and the staff are very good especially ed the manager and stuart who are both into planted tanks, the marine side of the shop is also very good and very exstensive, the tropical fish and marine fish all look very good quality, all in all this is one very nice shop, regards john. ps: its sells everything to with fishkeeping, cold water, tropical marine, tropical freshwater.

Take this as a hypothetical shop - what should it sell?

Dry powder ferts! Its difficult to find the stuff at competative prices. I only know of one or two online shops that sell them. Other liquid ferts and traces too.

Also, decent lighting. Not just jo-shmo "tropical" tubes, decent range of good lighting to choose from. This includes compact fluorescents and starters :)

CO2 gear. Diffusers, bottles, even bottle refilling/trade (like a gas supplier). Also anything else CO2 related.

Test kits relevant to planted tanks - as well as your standard kits, kits for testing that your ferts levels are doing good :)

Finally, of course, good quality plants and fish! I'm not too worried about oddball fish but would be nice if this shop had a good selection and varied from the usual plants and fish. It would be great if the shop had good plant growing facilities to care for plant stock before selling it on.

I think that covers everything ;) Appart from stuff to buy, this fictional shop would have great staff that knew their stuff, with a wide variety of experiences and able to advise on different approaches (not just set on one principal and preaching that). And obviously great knowledge of fish of course :)

Did I miss anything? ;)

Fair comment on different planted tank methods!

I would love to find a place that had true branchy wood. (not just chunks and ugly pieces) It is so hard to find wood that really looks good, and most places you get what they decide to send you. It would be really nice to be able to pick what I want so I could get something that would actually work in my tanks!

It would be great to be able to get live worms or starter kits, regular foods, wood, plants, co2, and fish all in the same place where you could combine shipping and save some money. Every one charges seperate shipping for all the different things. If you could put the plants and small things in the box with the fish then you could save a good bit on shipping charges. That would make it more worth it.

A place that had cheap versions of stuff for those that are working broke would be great. Some of us don't care about the name on the item. We just need it to work and not kill our budget. used and repaired items at lower prices would be good too.
