When swordtails, platties, etc give birth how long does it take? Do they all squirt out together or do they get born gradually? Did the mother go behind a rock, a filter, the plants to give birth?

As we have only had our fish a short time, it would be great to hear about the experiences you have had with your fish giving birth as we have not had time to learn the fish behaviour and personalities. They are starting to come through but help and stories from forum members would be a big bonus. I know every fish is different but your info would be a great starting point.

Thank you

Charlie

Mine have tended to sink down among the plants in the evening, after lights out, and push them out one by one, so it has taken up to 24 hours to get the whole batch. Some mothers eat them, other don't.

I am rearing Guppy & Molly.

From my observation, both type of fishes give birth to fry one by one.

Molly normally will find somewhere to hide when they r ready to give birth, they breath faster and be more cautious.

Guppy also will look for place to hide, but they will swim everywhere while giving birth if there are fishes interupting her.

They will take few hours to finish the whole task, then they will look exhausted.
