I am feeling guilty for my parents with all these tanks running. When i get working at the LFS ill chip in a few quid. So how much do you pay a month for your electricity bill with all your tanks, heaters, air pumps and lights running?

I can't imagine it adds up to much. There are 3 tanks in our house and even if it was 5% of the bill (and there's absolutely no way it's that much) that would come to $3.00 CAD or a bit more. It's probably no more than 50 cents a tank unless you're running a marine setup with some high wattage lighting.

My advice (as a father of 2) is to find something that they enjoy but don't often get for themselves and treat them once a month. In my case it would be a favorite candy or magazine, something along that line. It's a bit more thoughtful and representative of the value you place on your hobby.

Yikes! Mine's over twice that and I live only a few miles from Niagara Falls, one of the world's greatest sources of hydroelectric power.

Im starting to become a fish lover, but i also love gaming and i have a high end gaming system which uses alot of power, along with a gaming laptop.

The bill last month was in the red, but since then iv cut down on charging my laptop, and dont leave my PC on overnight or when im out.

Im hoping the addition of a fish tank in my room wont take up too much power, its only a little light/heater/pump. Eeeeek!

I cant imagine!
30g tank: Sun-glow light, 60 gallon filter, 20 gallon filter, Heater!
20g tank: Sun-glow light, 30g heater, air pump, Heater
10g tank: 5g Filter, Lized Lamp, Heater.
I know that I need to upgrade on the filter from my 10, plus there are only babies in there.

i pay £50 a month in electric thats the price of lots of tanks but oh well its a hobby i love so who cares :D

If you look in my sig all but the 65 & the 72 are in one room. The biggest electric draw is the heaters, having all the tanks in one small insulated room contains heat, the cory tanks don't even need heaters, as the room temp is around 75F. I cut a heat register into the main trunk, the room is heated by my gas forced air furnace in the winter.

Next biggest draw was all the power filters & small air pumps. I recently converted to a central air system with one large pump that provides air for all the tanks. This pump pulls 60 watts, and I'm bleeding off around 1/2 to 1/3 of the air. This eliminates nearly 20 power filters, along with 8 smaller air pumps, and several powerheads.

I have no live plants, much of the light is provided by a window, and flouro lights that light 2 or 3 tanks per unit.

My electric increase with all these tanks was getting towards $80 monthly, since I switched filtration I'm down towards $50 per month. I'm looking into a small gas space heater, this will heat the whole room, which will save a lot during the summer months. A few smaller freshwater tanks can't cost more than a couple dollars monthly to run, lights for plants will increase this a bit.

You can offer to pay a percentage of the electric bill. My son pays 1/5th of the bill. There are 5 people so the bill is divided by 5.

We recently had our electric bill for the last quarter and it had risen from around £250 a quarter to nearly £500 because of the increased heating times needed to keep the fish room at temperature during the coldest part of winter. Our total electric costs for the whole year worked out at a little over £1300 which although high isnt bad considering we have 17 fish tanks with around 900 gallons of water in them and 11 vivariums, plus its a fairly large 4 bedroomed house and we use electric for cooking so i would imagine the impact that a few average sized aquariums make on the electric bill is very small.

yeah that's more like ours, I think that's a Brit thing too, they skin us for money.

I hate British Gas, they are a personal purple passion of mine.
