Alright, so about one week ago starting tomorrow, i had my first guppy fry ever. I have lots of plants in there and i was able to save about 4 when i noticed that the mother was much smaller. I knew the mother was going to have them soon because she was very huge and kinda squareish for weeks.

Since then I knew what to look for and decided when they got that big to moved the preg females to the plastic breeder trap which has the grate at the bottom and is able to hold 2 pregnant females at once.

I been watching this one girl for about a week now, she had a large gravid spot but wasn't quiet big so i gave her about a week till delivery. Anyway, today i noticed she was much smaller and i barely could see a gravid spot so i decided to look around the aquarium and low and behold i found one baby fry. I couldn't find any more fry but the mother looks empty so i went ahead and put her in the breeding trap just in case.

She didn't look that big and squarish like the other one. And i just bought these guppies about a month ago. I figure right now they are all young and won't give me many fry. My question is, when the females are this young should i go ahead and move them to the breeder trap when they start showing a dark gravid spot? I don't think they will get very big at this age. So maybe my real question is, can you put females in a breeding trap to early? I bought the biggest one i could buy so they would have plenty of room to swim.

I've breed guppies and read alot of info on their breeding as well. Through experience, when the female is gravid with eggs, she will get large. A few weeks before she will drop her fry, she will even get larger in size, almost squarish. This is becuase her eggs are large enough for the fry to hatch.

You can put the females in a breeding trap early, but I never liked to. I just feel sorry since she's in a confined container and sometimes don't drop for a weeks later. I basically just put the female after I see her drop her first fry. I'm always monitoring my tanks, so it's easy for me to notice this. If it's not, then maybe once the fish has gotten bigger like how I mentioned it, then go ahead and put the female in there.

my guppies get quite big when they are going to give birth. i put them in the breeding net about a week before
