saw some jumbo guppies this weekend at my LFS. They were HUGE, especially some of the females which were bordering molly size. how new is this strain? i'd never heard of them before saturday.

My female that I had for a long time was huge also, I got her and she was normal size, and then just got big ... my friend who works at the LFS said she has never seen one that big, and now my male is doing the same thing, and she commented on him too. Must be something in the water  Anyways... I had her for 1 1/2 years... but only grew that huge like the past 8 months after I purchased her.

I also have a big girl. She started out regular guppy size and now she's bigger than most of the platies and just slightly smaller than the male sword minus the tail. My second guppy is almost as big. I have heard that guppies given plenty of growing room may reach a good size. Don't know how true this is though.

That's crazy I've never seen any that big which would make me guess its a new or at least uncommon strain.

As soon as I get my camera charged up I'll try to post pics of her near the sword and platy so you can judge for yourself. Personally I think she's huge next to most of the female guppies I've seen. ;)

they were about that big, Tokis, and the males were quite large as well. Maybe they were just older? I'll see if I can get pictures next time I get out there.

The ones that I kept in a ten gallon seemed to grow very large as well.

Large size in guppies is actually a product of domestication.

I think they were probably just older guppys then :) , most guppys sold at lfs can be as young as 4-5months old, so although they may be sexually mature, they still have quite a lot of growing to do and many not be fully grown until they are a 1 year+ old  .

Edit: i have also found that guppys that grow larger, particually with males, tend to be less inbred and have more stamina too :good: .

Ok I think I got the image posting right. The big guppy is in the center above is another guppy and below is a neon platy.

mm.. they were about as large as the one (by comparison to that platy) in madmom's picture. I didn't know they could get so big. Althoguh, to be fair, even though I knew mollies got to be 3 inches, it never really registered until i saw fully grown ones. When i kept them as a little kid they never lived that long :X

There weren't any when i went to the store today, but they DID have some very adorable little blackchins  not to mention a bunch of other fish that have been on my wish list forever

My very first guppy I had reach a size of 3.5 inches. She was huge. She had some fry. But after birth I released her and some of my bigger fish kept on nipping on her and killed her. But her fry grew up and I kept them. One of her female guppys was 2 inches within a 9 month period. Later she had fry which I have today in a 10 gallon fry tank. But the female guppy died from a fungal infection. I will miss her. But I will keep on breeding from the very first guppy I had. So I have 3rd generation guppy. I will keep a few of the guppy fry I have now and breed them. I will keep the family from the first guppy I had
