i bought a silver molly drom my lps 4-5 days ago and i found out
that today she had 13 fry(that iv managed to catch) and theres a few more hiding in the stones
i am realy happy but a few look a bit unstable in the breeding trap.
three of them are lying on the floor
she must have dropped in the night i came home thismorning and noticed she had became increadably skinny.
what could i feed them, im currently feeding them frozen dried brine shrimp.
thanks

Are they eating the brine shrimp ok? I would have thought brine shrimp was too big for day old fry,

You could try powered baby food of crush some flake before giving it to them as they are small & may not be eating the larger brine shrimp.

My platty fry sometime lie on the bottom, seems like they enjoy a rest now and again when they are less than 1 week old. For the first day or 2 they spend a lot of time just lying there, especially the smaller ones.

Good luck with them.

thanks.
it isnt live brine shrimp its tiny cubes of frozen dried brine shrimp and they seem to
like it.
il try some flake before lights out.which reminds me what should i do with the fish tank light...
leave it on or turn it of.what is best for the fry
o yeh and iv just caught another 2 so thats 15. YAY!!!
thanks

I keep my lights on just as I normally do. I'm not sure if fry need less/more light, but mine have done alright. :/ I also feed my newborn fry freshly hatched baby brine shrimp (I have jars set up to hatch new shrimp daily). They haven't had trouble eating them (I have swordtail, molly, guppy, and platy fry). I also alternate with crushed flake food, crushed freeze dried bloodworms, fry food (small pellets for fry), and crushed dried shrimp. As long as the pieces are small enough for the tiny fry mouths, they eat it! :D

Best of luck with your new little ones. :good:

:good: wow congrats on your new fry.I leave my aquarium lights on to i don't think it harms them.Goodluck with raising them there loads of fun.

thanks.

just found another 1 lol. 16 now
can you tell if there male or female yet.
when i find my usb for my camara ill post some pics

I've always had the best luck with feeding brand new fry the "liquifry" liquid food for the first few days - just put a few drops in the breeder and they'll munch on it. Then, after a few days, I feed them the hikari first bites for about 6 weeks, then on to crushed flake.

Hey congratulations! Liquifry is meant to be good for newborns! I reckon just leave the lights on as normal to get them into the same routine as the rest of the tank, cant wait for pics :D

im down to 15 fry now 1 has unfortanitly died in the breeding trap. :(

This is the method I use to hatch my baby brine shrimp. I purchased the eggs off of Aquabid and set up jars as outlined on this site. DIY Brine Shrimp Hatchery

Good luck with your little ones. And it's not unheard of for some to die. It's sad, but it happens. Hopefully the rest will do well and best of luck with any more you may get soon. :D

thanks but im back up to 16.
iv just this min found another one but i couldent help wonder if she is still popping them
out.as you know i done a waterchange today emptying 3/4 of the water and then refilling
it with new water.surely a fry could not survive stones crushing onto its body whilst
i was cleaning the tank.
do you think she is still poping them out?
thanks

iv just been looking at her and her gravid black spot looks even darker.
i think she will drop some tonight.
is this usual for a mollie to have a batch of fry and then pop the odd couple out
now and then a day or 2 after.
thanks

I've had my mollies drop fry over a couple of days before. I don't know if they thought conditions weren't safe or what, but they held onto them. :/ I've had a couple of swordtails do that too.

Well you cant tell if the fry are male or female yet. They are not old enough to develop a gonopodium or a gravid spot. It took my male fry 3 months to develop his gonopodium but the females got their gravid spots within 2 months. The foods you should be feeding you fry when they are born is really baby brine shrimp and baby food. I will put a website which shows some foods you can feed your fry.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/NavR...cfm?N=2004+6095

I have fry that are 3 months old, 2 months old, and 1 month old and I feed them many foods. In the mourning I feed them crushed freeze-dried blood worms, Crushed tetramin flakes, Hikaro Micro pellets, and Baby Bites. I dont feed that all in the mourning. I rotate their feeding schedual. In the afternoon I feed the Hikari Frozen Baby Brine Shrimp. In the fry tank I also have 1 red cherry shrimp. Its been a bit of help keeping the tank clean. I am planning to add 6 more. The shrimp really gets along with the fry and it has caused no problems. I hope the website helps you choose the food you will feed your fry :good:
