Hey all

I have a planted 40l tank, that Im looking to make betta :p (sorry :D)

Anyway, my idea was to maybe add a betta? Currently the only inhabitants are 3 celestrial pearl danios and cherry shrimp.

I not sure if a betta would be suitable though, I have a 10x flow in the tank due to it being planted and it is also 10 gallons so many a bit too large?

Please let me know what you think

Thanks

Will

Danios tend to be somewhat aggressive. But, then again, it all depends on the fish; I find that girls with their shorter fins are better with danios with boys. ^^; Also, 10-gallons is *not* too big! :hyper: The only thing possible is "too small". *really*. XD ^^;

the only thing that would make the betta miserable would be the current. bettas dont like currents at all! if you want a betta in that tank then you would have to kill the current.

Is it possible for you to slow the flow somewhat? Plants don't need an absolutely vast amount of flow to grow and the betta would be a lot more comfortable.

An idea, if you can't slow the flow too much to be comfortable for a long finned male, is to get a short finned male like a bog standard Plakat or a Dragon (also plakat) . Such a type with it's short fins are more like the wild counterparts and can cope with current a lot better than the very fancy varieties like Rosetails and crowntails ect.

A group of girls would also be a good alternative to a male. They also have short fins, come in just as many pretty colours, and are equally as full of personality as males. In a ten gallon you can do a group of 5 girls well enough.

I have a male in need of rehoming if you decide to get one.

there is a post on the bettas section called "the best current killing method" that works great! i used it on my community tank with my betta in it and he loves it! big_eyes im actually looking for a new betta, where are you from? i would love to rehome him. i have a 10gal set up, cycled and waiting for one.

Hiya, I've tried to link it but the link won't work for some reason :unsure: If you go to my profile and view topics, you'll soon see it near the top. 'male betta for rehoming' or something close to.

I'm still a newbie at this so i'm not disagreeing with you but my veiltail loved the current in my tank, used to swim into it and let it swish him round the tank. But as has been said they all have their own personalities so perhaps mine was the exception to the rule :lol:

i guess you will just have to try it and see how he reacts to it. best of luck hun!

Hi, I have a betta in a 48 litre tank, and he seems happy. 40L is definitely not too large. My filter is a Fluval 2 plus and I was worried the flow would be too much, but I have it angled to hit the wall and put stocking over the intake and he is fine. The flow tends to reduce over time as well, and is only strong when I've just cleaned the filter media. As long as there is a part of the tank he can go to where there isn't too much flow he'll be okay. My betta also loves to swim against the current.
