Hi,
I am fishlessly cycling the new tank at the moment.
90L, 40w fluoro (11 hrs a day). I added some "once a month" fertiliser when i put the plants in...
I added 2 plants two days ago, one is fine (i dont know what it is... reddish stems and small green leaves, only about 9cm tall.
the other is Myriophyllum aquaticum. It was fine for 24 hours, then the leaves have started to discolour. there was one period where it got no light for 20 hours, but I have a timer now... and i left the light on for 8 hours last night. Could missing the light for this time have done that? it is worse since I had the light on last night. or Is the ammonia killing it?
It had no roots, and is bound with a lead weight.
thanks!

Myriophyllum species are difficult to grow in the aquarium. They require very high light levels and then don't really thrive without CO2 injection. The normal reaction is for the plant to bolt ot the surface, all the lower leaves fall off and you end up with a stalk from substrate to surface with 4 - 5 small leaves at the top. The stalk then generally rots from the bottom and the remains float.

You really need twice as much wattage of full spectrum, (5500K - 6500K), on for 10 - 12 hours a day to get that going.

COugh...cough...
welllllllll...... i think I just found the problem...
Lets just say there was a little mix up with the tests, and one wasnt working properly and my ammonia levels were ACTUALLY around 50ppm or so.....
anyway.......
I have 90% water changed now, and my parrot feather is growing new tufts of leaves all along the stems.
Its still alive!!!! I just had to remove the old leaves which had turned into brown slime...
And its growing lots of roots!
hooray!!!

That's good to hear, nero, but I'll have to agree with LL ... you don't have enough light to keep parrot feather alive and healthy.
