Hi

I have an established tank but this is only smal... so I bought a bigger one, set it up, planted it and have left to run for over a week... The water has gone yellow? What does this mean and how to i sort it out?

Hi have you got any bog wood or mopani wood in the tank? I ask as both of these types of wood leach tannins into the water over time, creating a tea coloured water effect.

yes we do...how can I stop it...should i change the water?

Plenty of water changes and fresh filter wool will clear it in time :)

thanks guys
will do water changes daily and wont add fish till it clears. so glad i found this site! :good:

yea when u buy any type of wood try to leave it in a bucket of water for a week or 2 to leech out the tannins once those are gone the water will be normal, but not to worry as it shouldent hurt ur fish

When first buying it if you don't like the "tea effect" it causes sometimes you can boil it for a period of time and get the tannins out faster.

I myself like the effect but I'm into the "amazon look" to start with.

yeah me and my hubby conflicting as he likes the yellow effect... Having probs also the flow in the tank is alot faster than my old one...will the fish just get used to it or is there something i can do?

What kind of fish are they? Some fish like fast flows but some dont like any flow at all. Most likey your fish will be fine.

There is a product which I cant remeber the name of at the moment which you can add to your filter and it does a great job of polishing the water and removing tannins. Its called something like purigreen (someone will be able to give you the exact name).

i have a catfish of some sort (sorry but the name escapes me) 2 neons and a clown loach. What fish do you recommend alongside these guys. my tank is a 72 litre.... sorry for asking so many questions but for so long I have just guessed what to do! Now I have people to ask!

Hi again,

i have a catfish of some sort (sorry but the name escapes me)

Corrydorus or pleco by any chance? If it is a pleco, could you post a photo, so some get too large for a 72liter. Corrys also need to be in groups, preferably of 6.

These also need to be in minimum groups of 6

and a clown loach.

Clown loaches can grow to 12 inch, but usualy to 8, so will be too big for the tank. Also, they are a sholing fish, so need to be in groups of 4 or more. TBH, offloading the fish you have that will get too big and boosing to sholers up to recomended numbers would bring you close to full stocked  , sorry I know this is not what you want to hear, but you may get away with some hatchets at the top, so long as you have a tight fitting cover and keep up with water changes, as they are jumpers.

im gutted... ive had these fish for about 8months now and they seem happy enough! Its not a pleco although we used to have a small one. Can you give me an idea of what and how many fish would be ok in my tank please? sorry to be a pest

sorry to be a pest

If I thought you were anything of the sort, I wouldn't keep replying :hey:

If it isn't a pleco, is it similar to one of these? linky

As a general rule, its one inch per gallon. 72 liters is roughly 16gallons or 16 inches. This is only a guidelin however, as this would make you overstocked already, if other factors weren't taken into account.... Most of the fish you have are low waste producers, so, providing ample filtration, you could potentialy double the ammount, so long as you are vidulant, remain careful about mixing to avoid stress and keep up with your waterchanges :good:
