Hi folks,

I bought two more yellow labs for my mbuna tank today, but they look different than the other two I bought last week.

The two original ones I bought are completely yellow (obviously lol) with black dorsal fins, but the ones I bought today are totally yellow all over with black pectoral fins???

Can anyone shed any light, on if I have two males and two females. I found info on sexing them but nothing was said about this.

cheers chish

I don't think that has anything to do with sexing the fish..... I have had 2 males and one was almost completely yellow, while the other got really black... Luck of the draw maybe? hahaha!

anyway, for sexing, I believe it has to do with the color of the anal fin.... if it is black (or has black) it is male..... fully yellow is female apparently....

although with hybrids and such it is said to have altered the possibility for a correct sexing so honestly there is no 100% way to know unless you saw mating and such....

hope this helps!

There is only one way to sex these and that's by venting which just means looking at there bits but this can only be done when the fish is about 2".

have a look on google for venting there's some great articles about it and it is easier than it looks.

Yellow labs are one of the most bred cichlids in the hobby each time they are inbred they loose a bit of there original colouring until you get some of the really bad examples which have zebra stripes on them and then there cross breeding, i had some yellow labs that were crossed with red zebra and they were totally yellow !

Hmmmm, I dont know if I fancy staring at a fishes privates lol, although its good info so thanks. I reckon the labs with the black dorsal fins are pure yellow labs, as every pic I have seen is of ones like them.

The other ones are slightly more orange, so I think they could be crosses with red zebras????

I might try the venting thing though   maybe.....

I'll try and get pics of them if they stay still enough

cheers chish
