Hi, I bought a 25 gal yesterday. And im waiting for it to mature. I havent dicided what fish to put in. I saw some yellow labs at our local pet shop, and was wondering wat other fish i could put with them. I also want to know how many yellow labs i can put in! Any advice is would be apreciated, also any other sugestions of any other fish, filtration, substrate, decoration. (sorry about spelling, im not english)

howdy & welcome to cichlids!!

IMHO (in my humble opinion) your tank is abit small for more then 3 yellow labs. and definately too small for another kind of fish.

Thats not to say you're fish is limited, there are many other smaller cichlids that are suitable for your tank space.

from Tanganyika: Julidochromis, Lamprologus occelatus (shell dweller), Neolamprologus leleupi

from Malawi: Cynotilapia afra, Iodotropheus sprengerae (rusties) even the stuartgranti would be lovely.

Tropheops group but they'd need to be watched as their aggressive but colorful and lively.

filtration is mostly a personal choice, do you like the the Hang on back type or the canister type?

as for me, i'm a HOB (hang on back) type of girl B) and use Aqua clear filters along with Emperors on all of my tanks.

substrate: African cichlids like to sift the sand for micro-organisms to feed upon so I always suggest SAND.

decoration: plenty of hiding spaces, the more the fish are comfortable and able to hide the more safe they feel so they venture out and are more social.

rocks piled & spaced for caves or store bought caves work wonderfuly

Hi thanks. Do jou think 2 yellow labs, 2 Cynotilapia afra, and a few Julidochromis would be ok or too much?
These are Julidochromis right?

I believe that the general idea is you either keep Malawi's OR Tanganyikan's and not mix them up.

hey vis, that would be fine BUT most important is when you research the fish pay close attention to 3 things

adult size

aggression

what they eat/type they are (omnivore, herbivore, meatasaurus OOPS, carnivore) sorry, a lil'

mommy talk there

but mixing the two lakes is fine as long as you take into account those three very important things, some mix, some dont.
