I recently purchased some yellow labs and Pseudotropheus Zebras. ALthough the zebras are growing well the labs are the same size as when I bought them?
I have made sure by watching that the labs are eating and they always are the first to the food and seem to stuff themselves silly but they dont seem to be growing, is this normal?

Hi Losi :) ,

my Labs seem to be growing somewhat slower than my other Mbuna as well (although I have seen some growth change since I got them, which was only a few weeks ago)

I am not too worried though because they are eating plenty and their yellow colouring is fantastically bright with the black stripe flowing through their dorsal fin so I can only assume they are healthy.

hopefully some of the others will put us straight in a while *coughs..Ferris, freddyk, where are ya...coughs*

Your labs are probably fine, Zebra's grow faster than most Mbuna.

What are you saying, I'm predictable?? :grr:
was thinking more along the lines of RELIABLE..a better, more deserved title me thinks :D .

I feed them Cichlid sticks and the occasional treat of Artemia. I am not too worried about them as they too have great colour and are the most active fish in there!

Predictable & Reliable as always!! :D

Sounds good - keep it up, feed them less food more often (growing fish digest fast), keep the water pristine, and exercise patience - they'll grow.

Cheers, did have a thought, the cichlid sticks may be too big for them and the other fish nip in, I have crushed some up a bit and they seem to take this more readily!

:D Cheers all!

sorry to hijack for a second here Losi :*) .....

....on the question of feeding....mine don't seem too keen on the spirulina flakes I give them :/ .

They love the cichlid pellets (that I crush up at present to give the little buggers a chance to get 'em in their mouths!!) which has spirulina in but they also go nuts for your good 'ole fashioned tropical flakes!!!!

is this normal?? Is this ok for them??

thanks (and sorry again Losi!)

Labidochromis are not herbivorous fish. They don't require very much spirulina in their diet. They are insectivores. I'd sooner put them in a hap tank then an mbuna tank because of this. Standard flakes and pellets are not only good for this particular group, they're recommended.

LEt me double check this, just standard Tropical flakes?? :)

sorry, didn't explain myself fully....

...freddy....i was referring to all of the fish in my Mbuna tank preferring the flakes and pellets, not just the Labs.

I will supplement with peas, cucumber, and a weekly brine shrimp supplement

Is it still all ok?

cheers for your patience!!

thanks again
