I came home from work this morning and found that one of my 2 pregnant marigold lyretail swordies had given birth. I only found 7 of them so I suspect some may have been eaten. But 7 is a nice number of babies especially since my fry tank is already pretty full. My 2 spare tanks are currently in use by cory fry and cory eggs and the other spare tank has the remaining pregnant marigold girl in it. She looks like she will be having hers any time now. Over in my 55 gal tank Lucy, my red lyretail swordie also appears to be getting ready to drop, she's been laying in the grass in the bushy corner most of the day. And I think Nicky, black swordie and Lupe another red lyretail are due sometime next week! It's gonna be busy around here!

The swordies like to play head games with us. They want us to prove we are worthy of them before they'll give us what we want. Have you built them their shrine yet? It seems to have worked for me (75 gallon shrine that is with stand trimmed in solid maple board). They also expect you to spend at least 20 hours a week in slavish devotion taking care of their every want and need. That's all A_P, just devote your every waking hour to them and then they'll decide to cooperate and you to will have babies coming out your ears.

Just as I predicted Lucy the red lyretail swordie presented me with 26 little babies today. All have been safely transported to the fry tank which is definately getting split into two tanks tomorrow.

good luck with your babies polardbear...my swords keep screwing up my plans. first i got a male to go with two "females" i had from a previous batch and now both of the "females" are males....grrrr

Actually I find homes for most of my fry (so far) among friends and co workers. I haven't even tried selling or giving to any of the LFS mainly because I don't really like any of them very much. I only buy swordies from them if I happen to go in on the same day that they got them in otherwise within a few days their tanks look like they've been stricken with the plague. I'd say that most of their problems are brought on by shipping stress and overcrowding but they don't seem interested in doing anything about it. I really can't stand the thought of putting any of my babies into their care. I have sufficient tank space for now so that it's not a problem but eventually I'll run out of friends and co workers and I'll have to find some alternatives. Or I'll keep adding tanks to my house. I've still got tons of room in my 75 gallon and 55 gallon for more adults and I'm keeping my eyes open for used large tanks.

I am convinced that my male swordy is either gay or fussy. He has LOTS of girls to choose from.

Yes polard. Perhaps I do need to get their shrine up and running. Or perhaps they should hurry up and cooperte so then they will get as much attention as my guppies do
