i have a tank in our classroom there are 3 goldfish in there..quite healthy in fact. The tank is large but I dont know what to do with them over xmas 2 week break. In the past we only had one fish in a small tank and I used to bring him home. The 3 now have got a good filter in there, shall I just leave them for 2 weeks or what. It will get cold in school so their water temp will drop. any ideas please?

Gold fish can got for long periods of time with out food in garden ponds, but this is coz the temperature drop to low levels that the fish slows down every thing.

In a classroom it's goning to be much warmer, even if the heating is turned off. so it's to find someto take the fish or feed them.

Their will be some one a caretaker or other staff you'll be best finding it anyone is willing to feed the fish.

You can get holiday (feeder) blocks which fish love, they will last several days so all someone will have to do is add a nother half way through.

You could leave the fish as gold fish can got 14 days with out food, but personal it's not fair to them and would find something else from the list above.

Or take them home of course

Dont feed them holiday blocks as they contain mainly ash and pollute the water. In the last week feed a bit more than normal on the first two days and then gradually cut back so on the second last day they have half their amount.
The day before the holiday starts do an 80% water change and clean out the filter.
Add some greenery such as a handful of elodea densa and this will keep them going until you get back.

If you can find the janitor, ask him if he is popping back to the school at all.
Even if its just the once then he could put a pinch in for you.

:D Thanks..I know they leave the tropical tank for the 2 weeks but they have much more room.I will see if I can catch the caretaker. Impossible to do half water change hectic that time of year and too many kids about! Thanks anyway! If I take them home got no spare tanks!

glad i'm not the only one thinking about christmas break, but mine is four weeks long and i live 4 1/2 hours from my school -lol-

i'm hoping my LFS guy will agree to keep them in his fish room for the break. no way i'm hauling a 29, a 20, and two 10s home in my saturn
