Well ever since I have had my xenia it has gone through periods of a few days where it seems to completely close up. Since moving it into my new tank i have been able to see it a lot better and it seems to do this to spread itself.
What I have noticed is:
The polyps all retract, the stalks then spread themselves out on the rock (tending to go from sticking up out of the rock to laying flat against it) and then from the stalks lots of new polyps grow. After about 4 or 5 days the polyps then expand again and the stalk splits up into new stalks with the new polyps attached.
In the new tank it seems to do this maybe every 3-4 weeks. I had been worried that there was something wrong with it as it always seemed to go through periods where it looked half dead (the colour on it changes and it retracts completely). Have had it for close to a year though and it has done it all the time.
Just wondering if anyone else has ever seen this with their xenia?
