Wuv, I know you had a similar experience with Floor Boy, so it would be greatly appreciated if you, or anyone for that matter, could give me some advice...

It was my first night back into work last night, so I did all my routine betta water changes and got into bed for a couple of hours before my shift...when I woke up, I nearly had a fit when I found a shrivelled up, brown, hard betta body laying on my desk. I poked it and nothing happened so I peeled what I assumed to be a dead body off of the desk. Wrong. I thought he twitched a couple of times, but wrote it off as my imagination...until I thought I felt it again. I didn't want to risk anything this time so I put the "body" back in the water it had jumped from previously. This is when my betta started to twitch on the bottom of the bowl...

To make a long story short, I sat watching his every move up until I left for work last night, at which time I put him in the bathroom to rest in the dark. I came in from work this morning and he was swimming around.

What I've since done this morning is give him a 100% water change (he's in a 1 gallon bowl as I don't want him to be under too much stress getting to the surface for air) and given him a pinch of aquarium salt. I've taken his plant out as his tail is in a pretty bad state from being completely stuck to the desk and I don't want anything in his water that could potentially make things worse. I genuinely thought there was no way he'd be alive looking like that so I was preparing myself to dispose of the body, and wasn't as careful as I obviously should have been. His tail isn't completely split or anything, just torn around the edges.

What I'd like to know is whether I need to give him any sort of medicine to make sure he doesn't get any infections? If so, what? I've never had anything even remotely similar to this happen before, so I'm completely stumped.

He's always been an absolute pig, eating a good 5 or 6 pellets 2-3 times a day, but he hasn't eaten since I've been in this morning. Is it possible he's gone blind from the obvious damage his eyes will have suffered from being dried out for that long, or does it just seem more logical that he's feeling crap from being thisclose to death and doesn't feel like eating?

I'd really like not to have to put him down as he's got all his colour and is active, but I also want what's best for him. What do you think? I can get some pictures later on if needs be, but apart from having a torn up tail, he looks no different than any healthy betta...

Please help *crosses fingers*

Wow, that's incredible that he made it thru! What a strong boy!!

I can't say for sure what she will tell you, but I'm betting that she might suggest some colloidal silver if you can get your hands on some. I would guess that it is possible that he is blind from his eyes drying up, but even if that is the case, I have a completely blind betta and he lives a (for the most part) completely normal life. He might just be in complete shock from what he's been through so he may not do anything normal for several days. You might have already done this, but I'd get some salt into his tank and keep the water clean.

I'm always completely amazed at what these little buggers can survive through.
Good luck with him! I can't wait to hear how he turns out!

I'd give him some stress coat as his protective slime layer has probably dried out and this will help it grow back and is much better than most meds, its what he needs most right now.

That's great he made it, same as tokis has said stress coat for his slime coat, to build it back up faster.

Great, thanks. He is in clean, slightly salted water, at the moment and I will go and get some Stress Coat as soon as there's a car back in the driveway. I did have some before but used it all up and didn't get around to replacing it. My bad.

Anyway, fishie. I think he's regressed slightly. He's just sitting on his gravel right now gasping a little bit. He struggles to swim when I wiggle the bowl, but I suppose I would too if my arms and legs had been dried to something and then torn off

I just feel so bad...I didn't know he was alive, and I've probably made him worse. He still has all his colour and he is trying to swim, so I suppose that can only be a good sign...I just want him perfect again :(

Ab, if anyone can make him better, you can. ;) I know I've mentioned colloidal silver to ya a thousand times, but I think I may have found some around here.. try the GNC in Pen Centre, I know they carry it, I'm just not sure if it's the right strength. 500ppm, I believe. ...Posssssibly you can find it closer to home if that health store on Garrison is still there [by the crappy Chinese buffet? I didn't see it when I was home], try looking them up in the phone book and call to see if they carry it.

If anything will work like a miracle drug to make him better, silver will.

I'm definitely gonna give that a shot, and if I have no luck I'll try visiting our "cool" mall to see what the health store there has. If not, it's a trip to the Pen for me...I can't bear it when anything happens to one of my babies. I'll have some colloidal silver by the morning, rest assured

You could set a little airstone up for him if he's heavy breathing.

Too late...I've just put him out of his misery. He was getting worse and obviously suffering, so I wasn't going to prolong it any more. He was obviously too far gone. He was nearly solid when I found him so I can only imagine what that did to his insides.

God, I hate killing them...it makes me cry every time.

R.I.P, little man.

awww,I'm so sorry MissD :( Sorry I wasn't around as well (darn gardening!!) but I would have only suggested the stress coat and silver, it was really all you can do when this happens to them. Seriously grab some silver to keep on hand though. I've ,since floorboy, had this happen to one of my crownies and he bounced back nicely, but he'd only been out for around two hours when I found him. It may just have been too late for your little guy :/
Bah, so sorry for ya.

Thanks anyway, I'm definitely going to be investing in some colloidal silver. I've still got 15 bettas on the go so it seems like a good investment should anything happen to them. Not that I'm saying it's going to or that I want it to, obviously, but having 13 of them all being WalMart rescues, you can never be too careful!

I think the colloidal and maracyn-2 are going to be my new best friends. I've heard nothing but good about the colloidal silver, and the maracyn's just cured a case of dropsy on one of my bettas who's flaring at his plant as I type

Sorry to hear that, R.I.P.
