If those are pics of him in full flare then, he's not a Half Moon as the caudal fin (tail fin) is large, but does not come to a full 180 degrees and produce a perfect "D" shape. And it's kind of hard to tell from the pic, but I think he's a 6 ray Crown Tail. He's a real beauty. :hyper:

Yeah he looks like he is 6 ray SD CT, with amazing Finnage.
thanks for the compliments!

the caudal(thanks)fin is large but it doesn't really spread out

so you're saying 6 ray super delta crown tail! ok, is this a good fish? my 6 year old picked out at the LFS, and named him after her 1st grade boyfriend. lol. He's the only Betta I've ever had so far, sweet personality like a puppy, but I'm curious if he's a fish you would actually consider breeding or not ?

Doesn't really matter, it's all about preference. But usually breeders go for like colors in mates so a turquoise, bright rad, or a red cambodian female would work well.

Monty, thanks for repying to me.! I feel like a serious outcast on this forum because i seem to be the kiss of death on any topic; once I post it's the last! lol. what I'm getting at though is, is this fish really just a mut I picked up at the LFS or is it a fish worth considering?

Buying a fish from a fish store doesn't necessarily make it undesirable. It's all about your preference. Personally, I think that the fish you've found is a very good find for a "fish store" fish...if in that you mean you picked him up from Wal-mart or Petsmart out of a little cup. Typically, the fish store fish are VTs, which aren't actually a sanctioned fin type in the IBC. Crowntails are very much so a sanctioned tail type, and the only thing that would make him a "mut" is if he doesn't meet the standards for the CT.

Here are the IBC standards for CTs

ahhh the US is lucky though cuz i believe you guys dont just have VT's in the stores!
id say a cambo female HM/SD( white body red fins!)
just incase ya dont know hehe!
yeah i have that issue on threads but the forum has been fairly dead for some time! :(

my trouble is my time zone, as for the fish, we have several specialty shops here and they carry HM, and CT and I've even seen different varieties at Wally and Petco, but when my daughter selected this fish, I didn't like his color, turned out he was covered with Velvet, and and after that he had a bout with Fin Rot, and I don't know what he really looks like in a pristine state, his anal and dorsal fin have changed significantly since his health has improved, but that caudal fin looks curled up funny to me, and color is different in different light (how'd you like the glare from my phone across his body)

I don't see any problems with his caudal fins and most bettas change color in different lighting due to the iridesence. His colors may change as his health improves, but most likely the colors will only become more rich, not change to a different color all together.

when he was covered with velvet he actually looked completely turquoise and gold, I almost didn't get that it was a disease(my first sick fish and all)

I've looked over the standards for the breed CT, and at this time I can't say 'the webbing is reduced at least 33% versus the ray length',also the 'ventral fins have almost no reduction in the webbing', but I believe it is still growing out and I suspect he'll look different in a month. Actually he looks alot like the picture of the halfsun on that Halfsun Betta thread that crazycatfish started (in real life, not my crappy camera phone)
