Yea petco tests water for freeYou don't have to spend money for a test you will likely only use the once, or go to the petstore...if you are on city water, check the website of the water authority; most post water data.

I checked and can’t find it. SorryThat's fine, but if you check your water authority's site you might get the answer now. And it would be accurate.
Most cities make available on line the cities water quality on the cities water works website but N.O. water works is tough to find, what i could find is that most the water in N.O. comes from the mississippi river which is considered hard water but there us no mention of DGH, having said that most the information i did find mentioned the 8 contaminants that exceed health limits in the local water and also about lead contamination. Id be scared to drink the water in N.O. let alone put fish in it. Having said that if one does the water is hard and as such tetras and angels and other soft water fish shouldnt be kept in N.O. tap water. I live in Kansas not too far from N.O and our water is hard as well so i use RO water instead, id suggest looking into that not just for your fish but to drink as wellI checked and can’t find it. Sorry
Jeez thanks for researching that. People in Nola are a different breed so I think we are all fine drinking the water as many people have been doing it for decades. Also there are many people that keep fish in this city so I haven’t heard people complain about the water. Having said that there are still plenty of fish you can keep in harder water. Live bearers like platies guppies or endlers, danios shoal in groups.paradise fish shrimp snails other inverts or if you really want soft water fish then one can mix RO water or distilled water with tap water to dilute it.
