i have this plant (idk the name, i got it at walmart when i first started out) and sometimes my fish nibble on it. well some of the leaves are like dying, and my grandma thinks that i should take it out cuz the dying leaves are clouding my water. is my grandma right?

Might be an bacteria bloom from the extra ammonia from rotting leaves...........but is there enough rot to produce such high ammonia spikes so the filter cant handle??

Can you take a picture and post to see if its even aquatic?
I know of MANY pet stores selling non-aquatics as aquatic so I can only think what wally world would sell..............
If it does end up being a true aquatic why not just prune the rotting leaves?

Definately looks aquatic to me but cant tell you what it is, do you use ferts? what kind of light?
If you definately want to keep it you have to figure out whats making it rot..........
try trimming off the dead/dying leaves

um i use the hood lighting and the little bit of sun that comes through the curtains. and i figured it was the fish nibblin on it. my otocinclus are on it alot

Fluro lights?
I figure the lack of nutes and/or light could be killing it more than the fish, they are probably just eating the rotting parts anyways........

It's an amazon sword. It's not the fish that are killing it, it's lack of nutrients. Probably trace elements (micro nutrients). Although, this does depend how much much light you have. It could well be macro nutrients and/or CO2 if you have a lot of light.

it is an echinodorus of some kind, there are different types of swords. So, how much light do you have in your tank?

just the hood light, but i just opened the blinds behind the plant a couple of hours ago

does the light in the hood have a number and 'watt' next to it? Try not to get to much natural light in there, you'll get more algae. How long do you keep your light on for?

um i think 17 watt and it doesnt matter if i get algea. i have four otocinclus's and i dont think theres enough algae for them
