would this fish combo work?

Sorry not trying to say you're wrong but I have loads of platies and long-finned fishies and they have never nipped fins, not even my betta's ones. :dunno: Soz if that sounded rude!

A lot of things depends on the size of the tank and the furniture. The betta may be a bit shaky because somethimes they will not tollerate other fish, some do.

Platies MAY nip betta fins

MAY!

I'd be more worried about the betta. Everyone seems to be going community on bettas, but it really depends on the individual betta whether or not it will get along with the other fish. I personally couldn't do it with mine, cause he has this thing about wanting to kill anything that moves. Including me...

I put a platy in my community and in less than 10 seconds it swam up to my honey gourami and took a chunk out of it's tail...

Those fish would get along fine, platys would be questionable

What size tank?

And as far as the platys go -- are you planning on a male and a female, or both the same gender? If you're planning on males & females, I would up that number to 3 platys, and get 1 male and 2 females so the females don't get too stressed out.

[Edit] -- Shouldn't tetras be kept in groups? I could be wrong, because I've never owned any, but I thought I remember reading that somewhere.

Yeah, I think you should keep the BWs in a group of five or more. They do get kinda nippy and bored on their own.

As for the rest, sounds like a good combo.

What size is the tank? You would need a considerable sized tank to fit a school of cories and black widows with the other fish.

P.T.

Bettas are bloody evil! thats all i gatta say my old one killed 3 or 4 of my gups in 3 days.

They're not evil, it's just that to a betta, a guppy with its' lovely colorful tail looks like another betta.
