Melano females are infertile, and therefore the color has to be perpetuated using melano 'carrier' females of other colors, usually iridescent (royal, steel, green) colors. Unfortunately, these crosses inevitably introduce iridescence into the body and fins of the melano fish - a fault.

There's like a huge percentage of the blacks that will be infertile, and a very small percentage who are fertile. This is the reason I have a steel blue female to pair with my melano, but obviously as mentioned in my quote there's going to be faults in the colouring in some of the offspring. So, she's more than likely going to be infertile, yeah - given the ratio.
