hi all,

what i wanna know is, if u have carbon in ur filter, would this take out the liquid fertiliser out of the water? because ive heard a few people say it takes certain things out of the water?

and could some one please atleast give me a list of somesort, telling me what carbon does actually take out of the water, just so i know whart to add and what not to.

cheers :D

Most people who have planted tanks don't use carbon in their filtration systems. Yes! It will remove some of the much needed nutrients in the fertilizer.

I couldn't give you a list of all the chemicals it removes, suffice to say, it will remove most found in an aquarium, including any medication you may add.

Most people who add it, do so because it makes their water crystal clear. Regular water changes produce the same effect.

I had read that carbon pretty much loses it's effectiveness after a couple weeks, basically having absorbed as much as it can. I'm not sure if that is true or not. If that is the case, all the carbon would be doing is providing the bacteria colony a place to live. Someone please correct or clarify this please.

Your probably right there rdd1952. But most people with carbon in their filters replace it every 3-4 weeks anyway. They think the carbon will leach the chemicals back into the aquarium if they leave it in any longer than this. I don't know whether that actually happens though?

Edit:- Just found this info on carbon for you Seantheprawn.

It might answer some of your questions.

I only use carbon on rare occasions to remove medications or algae treatments (I recently tried Protalon 707 against my BGA). I leave it in for a few days then remove it.

If you have good plant growth then this will perform the similar chemical filtration with the benefits of seeing plants grow.
