Hi Everyone, just new here. A few days ago, I just got a new Veil-tailed Betta and named him Moxley. When I got him, he was doing okay, he was swimming about in his new tank, and he was eating well, but today my fiance and I noticed that he has cotton-like growth on his head, and his scales are dry-looking and has cracks. I tried to research on this, and my guess is that he has fungal infection, brought on possibly by stress from being handled, netted and bagged from the pet store, and to adjusting to a new environment. Before I placed him in the tank, I made sure that the tank was rinsed first in tap water (sans soap or detergent of course), and used the water that came with him from the pet shop. The fish food that I gave him is called Hikari Betta Bio-Gold. I followed the feeding instructions and made sure not to overfeed him. Can he be allergic to this perhaps? Can anybody give me advise or opinion on what possibly went wrong? Thanks!

The mistake you made was adding the pet shop water to his tank.

Pet shop water should never be added to your tank, and bag water is usually chocked full of waste and the nitrates and ammonia buildups that come with them.

Do a couple of large water changes, then do a 30% water change every other day for a couple of weeks, it should help him get better.

I find it best to feed fish once every 2 days, this way they consume their food quickly, and are more than happy about it.
