Worm attached close to fin

One of my old fish had this worm/fluke thing right next to the fin in the back of the fish the big fin i don't know what it is called but soon will leanr wht it is called. and i didn't know how to treat it and it had it for like 2 months and i coudn't fidn anyone who new what it was or how to treat it
 
Is it a white thing, about ... 1/4" to 1/2" long, with a forked end?

If so, that's probably an "anchor worm", and as Terry mentioned, a parasite medication would be indicated to remove it.
 
There are black worms, too.

From what I understand, the key giveaway that it's an anchor worm is that its (free) end is usually forked.
