Hi,

I had a 60l fry tank but due to space in the room thanks to my fiancee insisting we buy a 32" HD TV for the bedroom I had to run to P@H and pick up a smaller tank. I got a ClearSeal 30l with all the gubbins for the fry and birthing tank.

This was done on Saturday and the tank was all setup on Sunday, after letting the sponge filter sit in the main community tank for a day. I transfered my 2 Platy fry over to the 30l and also decided it was about time I moved the Guppies into the tank so the male would stop stressing them out. I don't think I could have done this at a better time as early Monday morning one of the mothers gave birth to 10 little fry. Last night she gave birth to another 20 fry. She now looks much thinner than she did so I just have 1 more pregnant Guppy to give birth.

I decided against using a breeding net and just put the mothers straight into the tank to give birth directly into the fry tank, seems to be ok at the moment as I'm feeding every 2-3 hours so they are pinching a little fry food and seem to be ignoring the fry :)

I'm so happy that I did everything right and I have so many fry, still another drop to come though. I can see another 30l coming up in a month or so :S

When should I move the first mother back into the community tank now she seems to have dropped all her fry?

Cheers

congratulations, and well done,i recently had over 60 platy fry from 2 mums, and i cant tell you how excited i was too,i usually left the mum in for a few hours after the birth( as soon as she looks back to normal again), then put her into the main tank ,the fry were transfered out of the birthing tank after a day and put in a larger fry tank, i didnt use the net either, but made sure both mums were well fed before putting them into the birthing tank, and as a result lost none (touch wood) now they are 5 and 3 days old,and still doing really well,i feed them twice aday on very finley crushed flakes (very fine) and they are growing like no ones biz,

anyway you are obviously over the moon, and i wish you all the luck in the world with them, and i just know you are right about another new tank ;) ( ihave some spare ones hidden in the bottom of cupboards here, just incase lol.......oh and again good luck with the forthcoming arrivals, if they havent already arrived.

Thanks for the responses :)

I moved the mother back into the main community tank after a day just to be sure, the other mother still hasn't dropped so I moved her back also.

The tank idea is still being worked out, I think I may have convinced my fiancee it's a good idea to get my 300l tank I want so we can use the 120l for a guppy tank. She likes the guppies most so she's thinking about it.

I still sit for ages just watching the babies. How do I go about cleaning the tank without sucking the little ones up into the bucket? There is a fair amount of uneaten food in the tank and I'm unsure on whether to just leave it or get rid of it somehow.

Cheers
Adam
