Wood?

I can't find any stickies around here about what woods you can safely put into your tank, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out here.

After spending many an hour watching my tank, I've decided it needs something more. I want to put a stick (or small branch) in there to work the background a little. Problem is, I don't know if it's safe to just find a nice piece-o-wood and dunk it in without screwing up my water conditions.

Any thoughts and general advice?
