soak it in a bucket for a week with water changes or it will tan the water a brown colour

get a bucket out your garage, fill it up with red hot water, and put the wood in it, leave for a few hours and repeat.

at first the water will probably be really brown, but after a few times doing this all the tannins should dissapear.

note, i said use hot water as it'll penetrate the wood better, but cold water also does the trick

Boiling is the most effective!

What kind of wood is it?

The hotter the water, the more it is going to make the pores on the wood open up. The more the pores open up, the more of the tannins will escape.
