Depending on the origin, you might drop it in boiling water, then soak it for anywhere from 48 hours to 3 months and possibly dip it in some kind of tank-safe cleaning solution

Or longer. I have some wood that's STILL bleeding tannins after being soaked for over 9. 5 was in a large pot outside and 4 in the tank.
