Hi, i had some wood in my bearded dragons vivarium but was wondering if this is ok for a fish tank. If so do i need to boil it to remove any bacteria and if so for how long
Thanks

yea you should boil it just in case, 6 hrs is whats recommended, if its too big you could either pour boiling water on it or use a dish washer on high heat lol...do you know what kind of wood it is?

LOL ... I used a dishwasher ... came out gleaming  ... but seriously ... haven't had hardly any tannins leaching :good:

That looks to me like Mopani wood or can even be a Driftwood, Yeah from the looks you can use that wood as most woods that used in aquatic used for reptiles.

You might need to soak it in a bucket of water for a few days, because it might float.

Agreed. If it has been dry, then it will definitely take time to get waterlogged. Really only 2 options: soak it until it stays submerged (probaly take several weeks) or attach weights such as slate to it to hold it down. But don't be surprised that even with a decent sized piece of slate attached, it still floats.

i find the problem with this sort of wood is that no matter how long you soak it, it will leak out 'tannins' which leave the water looking like a tea colour, which some fish like, but personally i really dont like the look of. I have a large piece of bogwood, and its still staining the water 3 yrs down the line, it just means more regular water changes if you dont like the staining of water
