the ship is in my tank above this one (4ft)

Looks like you have a lot of snails in there

they are applesnails (18 blue, 1 jade, 12 ivory and 2 chestnut)

Does that heater go into the sand though ?

in those pics it does but that is because the suckers came un-sucked
all is fine now and properly attached.
