x3 :(

Last saturday i took my full rio 180 stock (except for a baby molly, 9 rummy nose tetra and 2 L333's) to a LFS in trade for a bit of money and 10 rummynose tetra. Everything was fine until Monday morning when i found one dead. I didnt think much too it other than it been a sick fish or becoming stressed in the new tank. The rest of them have all been eating fine and all look fine.
Just ran some tests and heres the results:
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 10ppm
PH 7.2
But get this.... Ammonia .25 - .50 ppm!!!!

Hows this happened? The tanks been running for 6 months plus and ive never had any problems. I did a routine water change (50%) and filter clean (in tank water) on the weekend, after i'd bagged up my old stock ready to take to the LFS. How can i remove the ammonia quickly and safely? I cant take the fish to the downstairs as ive added salt to it ready for some puffers.

Cheers in advance

Could you have cleaned the filter bit too vigorously which resulted in a little bacteria loss...?

Have you checked under any ornaments for trapped waste or something, ive got some heavy waste producers in my tank and I can gravel vac one day and then the next I can see the poo collecting around my bogwood, its quite astonishing.

But i'm thinking if you cleaned the filter and then shortly after got an ammonia reading then possibly you cleaned it a bit too well.

I've got 10 rummynose and I always check their noses to ensure they are bright red, its a good indicator for me.

If you got ammonia readings then it's water changes until its under control.

Water changes will do the trick, you can try things that remove ammonia from the bottle but it#s a waste of money imo. As boring and tiriing as it is just change the water, check ammonia, if still present change again.

Might be worth checking for any dead rotting fish in the tank of maybe in the filter if theyre small enough to get through the strainer.

Thank you both.

Im on with the water changing now. Shall i do 50%, then fill it back up, test it. If its still not better try another 50%?

All the noses are bright red apart from one :-(

Just finished a 50% change and looks alot better,
The amonia has dropped,
Just gunna try another 25% and see what it looks like.
Thanx

Right, just done another 25%. Going to have a cig and then do another test.

Will inspect the filter for dead fish but i dont think they could get through the strainer. Maybe, as Lolly said, ive lost bacteria from cleaning the filter to much. I'll have to be more carefull next time.

Still a bit worried about the chap who hasn't got a very rummy nose  If the water is right, how long will it take for the colour to come back.

Cheers

Well this morning, no dead fish, bright red noses and no ammonia :hyper:

Thanks peeps
