I added Wisteria to my tank about 2 weeks ago and it has suddenly taken off, only a couple inches below the surface. I understnad that if it reaches the surface, it will change to the land variety. How do I prune it to keep it short? Do you just cut the top off and replant it? I actually read somewhere that you could lay it flat on the bottom and pin it down to get it to grow horizontally instead of vertically.

*Bump* I have the same question, can anyone help, please? Mine is going nuts and throwing out roots (?) all over. I love this plant, btw!

Good question....

I have wisteria too....it seemed to grow really well for a month or so...then I trimmed it, basically cutting off all the straggly bits. The taller parts then started to go a weird colour....like a khaki colour. BUT.....at the same time I noticed a bright green piece growing horizontally across my gravel. I let it go to see what would happen. Yesterday I gave the plants a good prune (and move around) and the piece that was on the gravel has rooted itself and is happier growing horizontally rather than vertical. It looks good as I have a lot of taller plants and its kinda carpetting a bit (kinda).....

I read somewhere that if the light is high in the tank that wisteria will prefer to grow more horizontal.....not sure how true that is but it surely was for me :D

I hope I'm not hijacking your thread, rdd, but do you guys have any pics of your wisteria? I bought a while back what I thought was water sprite, but was told today that it was wisteria...I have been floating it in my tank so now I'm worried.

heres my wysteria.

it was over grown 2 weeks ago. on friday 25th march i hacked it to bits, top was 1/3 tank height.

this pic was taken on the 30th.

(obviously it's the centre plant)

what a difference a light upgrade and co2 makes. a pictures worth a thousand words.

That's would be nice to know as I ordered some wisteria by mail and it should arrive in the next few days. I'll let you know how it goes. :D

my wysteria's growth is at a slow pace compared to how it was when i first planted it.....
the upper leaves and branches dont have roots hanging like the ones on the lower half...also the coloration on the lower half is a darker green while the top is very light green....i read somewhere that light caused this?

but on to pruning, i read somewhere on this forum that when branches from the top half are to b cut and planted.....but it will take time for the rooting to be established

Not a problem. As you can see, I never got a response to my originaly post. I have learned a little about it from another forum. I already knew that wisteria actually has two types of leaves, one when growing underwater and another when above water. When I first got mine, it had the above water leaves which are quite different from the ones in your pics. Mine has now started forming the lacy leaves and looks better. As for growing horizontally, I read somewhere that some people actually remove the leaves, lay the stems our across the bottom and hold them in place with something to get them to grow across teh bottom. They supposedly will root from every node that you removed leaves from. I haven't tried that so I'm not sure if it works or not.

Thanks for the info. The ones I bought probably has above water leaves, too, they were not fine like the ones in the pics. They had been floated in the store but I noticed that the ones that were actually planted in tanks in the same store grew lacy leaves on top.
