i want to upgrade my lighting but I'm not sure if what i want to do will work properly. i have a bit of an odd ball tank. its a 20 gall. with the foot print of a 10 gal. and a height of 22" ( 20x10x22) this makes lighting this tank difficult(forget aquascaping, which I'm getting into after a few equipment upgrades). currently I'm using two 15" 14 watt bulbs, they sit directly on top of the tank on a glass top. I'm also using an old stereo stand that iv taken the back and shelves out of for a tank stand. see picture below.

what i wanted to do is use two 24" lights and set them on top of the stand and remove the glass. the part I'm unsure of is that doing this will leave the lights 8 inches above the tank. would this distance from the tank create any problems? the wattage adds up the "ideal" 2 watts per gallon. but the distance concerns me. would it be best if i just cut the sides down say 5 inches and leave a small gap in between the tank and the lights? any advise would be greatly appreciated!

crummy paint program drawing but explains it straight forward. my camera batteries are dead and don't feel like taking another picture!

dont worry about! after some discussion with my gf, im getting a bigger tank. gonna start out with a new 40 gallon. i have a fluval 104 so this will work. can always upgrade to an eheim later. this way i can also get every bit of lighting and everything else i could possibly need in one shot (after we get a new car :p ). pennies are goin a jar for this lol.

EDIT: ok dummy me didn't think about the filter i had. but hey why not keep it to cycle a new tank and get a eheim with the 40?
