Hey all,
Ok first off i am a newbie but this will be my new tank so i know all about cycling and i dont plan to add all of these fish at once or anything crazy like that. ok anyway i am getting a FREE 50 gallon tank saturday and have spent a long time thinking about what to get. I have a list but i want to make my tank freshwater with sand substrate and plenty of plant and malaysian driftwood. I want to make sure my tank stays peaceful and "exotic" looking. Please add any advice or suggestion or insults or comments on my list of fish.

will these work together?

6+ glass catfish
6+ boesmani rainbowfish or some type of rainbowfish
pair of german blue ram cichlids
butterfly fish
bristlenose pleco
moolight gourami
DISUCS FISH (when i can afford a few)
Ottos or cories (love them both)
amano shrimp (not sure if these will be compatible with some of these fish but what the heck, i like em)

please alert me of any problems you forsee as i dont want to be the cause of any fishes death! Thank you

Definately take out the discus. they like much warmer temperatures and are best suited in a species only take for the most part.

Aren't butterfly fish saltwater fish? those are the only ones I know of...

Other than that it looks alright to me.

hmmm...didnt know about the discus and the warmer temperature but i do know they CAN be kept with other fish as long as you do the research (not doubting you just saying i know its possible to keep them in a tank with other fish) Someone on the forum suggested butterfly fish i have no idea. I will take your word for it as well, maybe look it up if i am able to find anything. I really do appreciate the help, i am sure it gets annoying hearing beginner questions and things of that nature but know you are ensuring the good health of my future fish thank you...anyone else have any knowledge on the above please feel free...thanks again

By the way...I am a little dissapointed i cant keep a discus...anyone know any large (55gal is what i got) beautiful peaceful community fish, i am willing to pay a little more but i want something very cool and prettty looking like the discus. I also love how they care for their young, bummer

I guess their are some that could be kept with them.. Although you would probably only be able to keep 3-4 full size discus in there.
Cool link thanks. I think it would be better for the fish if i didnt get the discus until i had a bigger tank that i could keep just them in...oh well its all for the better i can just get some cool smaller peaceful fish, i love cories anyway so i will get a bunch of those and i cant wait to get some glass catfish! thanks for all your time and help i will let you knwo how it goes! :good:

Butterfly fish are freshwater. They are top-water fish. Ottos are good algae eaters, and so are the shirmp so there could be abit of conflict there. Corys are a good addition to any tank and since you will have sand as your substrate i rekon you should get a few around 4-6 of the same type since they love being in groups of their own kind.

Butterfly fish normally chill at the top of the tank, so I don't see one going down to eat an amano shrimp. The gourami might try to eat them, so give the shrimp lots of small places to hide in.

ok if you want discus do this.

this will have to be your stocking

5 Discus
5 otos
5 corys

then you need a planted tank and bogwood.

please get the dimensions of the tank. also, please just stick to the stocking i gave you. the other fish will not be liked by the discus and could stress them and kill them.

this is what id do.

week 1 - RESEARCH DISCUS - get the tank
week 2 - RESEARCH DISCUS - add sand as substate, half fill,
week 3 - RESEARCH DICUS - Fill to the top STRT CYCLE
week 4 - RESEARCH DISCUS - Make sure you check yur cycle. ( go the the new to the hobby section and look at the pinned topic of fishless cycling if you dont know how to cycle
week 5 - RESEARCH DISCUS - Keep checking your Stats (still cycling)
week 6 - RESEARCH DISCUS - keep checking your stats (still cycling) and add Plants/bogwood
week 7 - RESEARCH DISCUS - keep checking your stats (still cycling)
week 8 - RESEARCH DISCUS - Check stats should ROUGHLY be cycled by now.
week 9 - RESEARCH DISCUS - if everything is going alright get some corys.
week 10 - RESEARCH DISCUS - get Otos
week 11 - ad finaly get your discus after all RESEARCH on discus.

I truly appreciate all the comments and your help. I am not sure if i am going to have discus in my tank as that will severly limit the different kinds of fish i could have. Dont worry though, i always do my research before adding any fish to a tank....i like to think of myself as a "responsible newbie" anyway i will let you know if i do decide to get the discus and have a dsicus tank, and i will definatley follow yourguidleines and do some reasearch of my own. I too believe if you are goin to keep fish you need to know what you are doing and care for them properly, which is one of the reasons i joined this forum. anyway, thanks again you have been very helpful. :good:

This is great advice! Discus aren't like most tropical fish and require a little more care to keep them healthy and happy. Not to mention the costs of them and it's not like a couple neon tetras you can pick up two for a dollar and make a few mistakes with them. Excellent advice from someone that knows!

If you do get Otos (and I strongly suggest you do) don't add them until the tank has been fully cycled then matured for around 5-6 weeks.

Be careful with what cories you pick, some may be suited to lower temps.
