Aim: to have several hardy plants flourishing.

I don't want CO2, i have swapped the lights originally with my juwel 260 for more plant effective ones and added reflectors.

I currently have just sand as a substrate but would happily add a gravel/nutrient clay (such as JBL Flurapol) if this will aid the plants. Do i need to do this for plants such as vallis and java fern/moss?

Java fern and mosses attach to decor so substrate isn't an issue.

Vallis may do better in a nutrient-rich substrate but it can obtain most nutrients through its leaves. It prefers harder water as it can extract carbon from the bi-carbonates present.

Thanks for the reply, i think i will add the nutrient substrate just to cover myself if i decide to plant more. Just another question, when would be the time that you would start thinking about adding co2?
Thanks

When you are over 2WPG and algae is starting to take over even though you are dosing correct amount of ferts, you have morderate amount of plants and you arent over feeding.
