Hi,
I have in my tank a male swordtail and some female platys. Those will not breed right? or will they? I really dont need any babies.
Thanks

i wouldnt of thought so  endlers and guppies can breed :D but i think that ur safe with a sword tail and a platy,

Apprantly they are able to breed! From what I have read anyhow. You may want to find a second opinion on this thouhg.

Platties cross easily with each other and other Xiphophorous species including the Swordtail. I will assume that they will breed at some point.

Technically they can because they come from the same family fish group but i thik it is more theory and the chances of them breeding is quite low; i have a friends who have owned swordtails and platys together for months and they have never bred...

Most common swordtails are Xiphophorus helleri, most common platys are Xiphophorus maculatus, or X. variatus. The swords and platys have been cross-bred for many years to produce most of the different varieties available to us today. Next time you're in your LFS, check out the different varieties of swords and platys, you have red wag swords, red wag platys, etc. Imagine a male swordtail without his sword....what have you got? Compare a female platy and a female swordtail and see if you can tell the difference.
