Well panic has struck. I have found my filter what I can only describe as 'burnt out' today. I have my new tank cycling but it is not ready for fish yet and I don't want to go out and buy a filter, as I would only need it for 3-4 days and it wouldn't do the job.

Would my fish be ok without a filter for around 3 days, if I did daily 10% water changes?

Are you severly overstocked?
If you aren't then do around 20% daily at least (I like my tank clean).

No in my old tank (70 litres) I am not overstocked. It currently has the following:

1 Gourami (4 inches)
1 Guppy
1 Swordtail
8 *small barbs*
1 Peppered Cory
1 Plec (3 inches)
5 Black tetras & 1 Neon

This may sound overstocked to some members, but like Inchworm said, as long as water params. are good, the fish are active and eating well I don't see there being any problem. And this conclusion reflects in the tank that I have never had a long-term disease within the tank, without less than 1 death per month.

You could move these fish into the new tank with the media from the burnt out filter along with some gravel; it will cycle quickly that way. Do a bunch of 20% water changes until water params are good.
