hi

i have a 40 litre tank with

5 zebra danio's (2 normal and 3 golden)
2 leapord danio's
1 platy (i will be getting some more platy's soon)
2 bristle nosed catfish (probably to be moved to another tank when they get too big)

i was wondering if these fish would suit a male and a couple female bettas? :/
thanks for reading and look forward to your replies.

First off, you need to choose either 1 male, or 5 or more females. Depending on the size of your tank you may only be able to have one male.

Males cannot be put with other males, and cannot be put with females unless breeding. They will probably injure one another, or kill one another.

What size tank is it?

First of all, you shouldn't house male and female bettas together. Males have to be kept alone. Females can be kept with other females, but its recommended that you have about 5 or 6 to even out aggression and you wouldn't have room for that.

Bettas and danios don't mix too well as the danios are very fast.
Also, you sound a little overstocked to me.

If you want a betta, the better option would be to set up a small tank to keep just one betta.

Danios are a no no they stress male bettas out and as every one else has said you cannot keep a male with females unfortunatly

Actually I would have said the PLatys would be bad for the male before the danios. -_- Mostly because platys resemble female bettas, are brightly colored, and can be fin nippers. The danios on the other hand are small and quick, but not fin nippers and aren't flashy enough to annoy the male. Everything I've heard suggests this up until now, but devon knows better than I do. :look:

Actually, danios and platys should be fine with a well-behaved betta... BUT... a 40 liter tank is way too small for a group of danios. Danios need much more swimming room; I'd reccomend a 80 liter (20 gallon) or bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if they get aggressive in a smaller tank.

No room for a betta in there, I would think.

Very true, I didn't even think to convert the tank size. If you divide the tank and give the betta 3-5 (12-20 liters) gallons and the Platys the other 5-7 gallons (20-28 liters), I think that would be ok, but no room for danios in there. :/

you have alot of fish in a 10 gallon tank... i wouldnt have put that many fish in there...

the rule of thumb is a inch of fish per gallon....

if you wanted to have a male ebtta you have to get a smaller tank for him.. maybe 2.5 or 5 gallon... from my experience... male bettas like to live by themselves.. other fish tend to stress them out...

I thought the rule was an inch of fish per liter?

i always learned it was gallon instead of liter... we rarely use liter in the U.S. lol..

I know we don't use liters here often (unless it's soda), but a gallon and a liter is a huge difference. A liter is only 1/4 of a gallon, I'd really like to know which it is now...

yea.. i kno its a big difference. buts dats a good question...... sumbody should find dat out lol.. maybe ive been told wrong the whole time lol

Although more of a guideline than a rule... it is an inch of fish a gallon. Not a set-in-stone-rule, but for small fish (like tetras, platies, and danios) in small tanks (anything 55 gallons or less), I'd follow it.

i knew i had heard it sumwhere.. although some people would follow it 4 liter also... its all about preference i guess...
